Always interested in art, Tom saw someone giving a tattoo in 1979 and knew it was to be his life's work. Learning from the "greats", and other local artists, he cultivated information regarding universal health precautions, disease recognition, & proper operatory procedures. He then moved on to spend more than 5 years at various colleges, improving his knowledge of art.
In 1993, he opened Cool Ghoul Tattoo Emporium at 428 E Burnside St, Portland, OR, where he tattooed many patrons including, but not limited to, some very well known members of the music industry. In the mid 2000's, he moved back to his hometown Clearlake, CA where he has improved all aspects of his skill. Tattooing has been the main focus for his art for over 30 years.
"Some time ago, I felt I had learned as much as I could
about art, so I decided to focus on how to be a better tattooist by changing such things as using different tattoo needle groupings and tuning machines in various ways to lessen the trauma of the tattoo on skin. By doing this, the tattoo will heal faster and last longer because the needles are able to penetrate properly on different depths of the skin as it varies from one part of the body to the next. I also try to educate myself and customers to properly take care of a healing tattoo so it will be beautiful for years to come."
"I've always admired the many aspects of art, such an impressive way to express oneself. Looking at a tattoo, I see such beauty. I've had a few tattoos done, but after seeing Tattoo Tom at work, I knew that I needed to learn this wonderful craft from him. I've been tattooing since April '09 and I've enjoyed every moment of it!"
